If you have one, an iPad or tablet would be useful but not essential.

Do you struggle in the winter for inspiration and knowing what to paint? Sometimes it's not easy sitting out sketching when it's really cold or the weather is bad. Taking photographs seem can seem a good option but how do you work creatively with them? You don't want to just end up with a painting of a photograph.

In this workshop, we will begin by walking and taking photographs in the amazing and inspiring location of  Lumsdale Waterfalls near Matlock, Derbyshire. Set amongst the ruins of industrial buildings, the waterfalls are an extremely rich source of visual material for painting. The terrain in pretty rugged and will require some stout boots but there are good paths and solid, if fairly steep steps.

You will be given tips on how to take photographs to work from in the studio.  Back at the hall we will print or view the photographs on iPads / tablets. We can then select which to work up into paintings. We will be working creatively with the photos through sketching, collage and painting to arrive at unexpected and exciting compositions.

This course is perfect for getting you past that artist's block and learning how to work up ideas when it is too cold to sketch outside. You should go home with enough ideas and material to keep you going for months!
